Myrrh was one of the three gifts presented to the infant Jesus by the Magi (Wise Men), as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:11). Before his crucifixion, Jesus was offered a drink of wine mixed with myrrh (or gall/vinegar, depending on the Gospel account) (Mark 15:23). Myrrh was often mixed with wine as a stupefying, pain-relieving potion, which Jesus refused to drink, showing his resolve to endure the full suffering.
